29%

Increase in pilot participants’ reported confidence after six weeks

The business challenge

Internal surveys showed employees were dissatisfied with manager-provided development support. Managers needed practical help with development conversations.

My role and scope

  • Identified Degreed Skill Coach, recruited volunteer managers, and ran a six-week pilot.
  • Personally created a step-by-step playbook with weekly activities and sample team communications.

Key decisions

  • Test the tool with volunteers recruited through #managing-at-uber before broader adoption.
  • Pair the platform with low-lift weekly activities so managers had a practical way to use it.

What I built

  • Built the manager playbook and pilot materials.
  • Launched the six-week pilot with weekly assignments and sample communications.

How I worked with others

  • Recruited managers through Uber’s manager Slack community and supported their use of Skill Coach with resources for conversations with direct reports.

Results and measurement

  • Pilot participants’ reported confidence supporting direct reports’ growth goals increased 29% — from 3.5 to 4.5 on a five-point scale.
  • This measures participant confidence, not demonstrated employee performance or business productivity.

What this demonstrates

Manager capability and employee development, combining a practical learning approach with hands-on program delivery.
